1. Curriculum components: Our departmental curriculum consists of two components, core courses (Major foundation courses and research methodology courses) and major courses.
2. Minimum credits to complete the degree: Including the credits from core courses, students seeking a master's degree must acquire a minimum of 24 credits, and students seeking a Ph. D. degree must acquire a minimum of 36 credits. Students who take courses from other departments can count these courses as their major courses upon the approval of their academic advisor.
3. Core courses (Major foundation): Under the guidance of their academic advisor, all students in the department are required to take major foundation courses (Core courses I- Major Foundation courses) that are opened by our department, but from a major other than their own. 1 or more classes should be taken during master's degree and doctoral degree programs.
4. Core courses (Research methodology): Under the guidance of their academic advisor, all students in the department are required to take courses related to research methodology that are opened by our department (Core Courses Ⅱ- Research Methodology Courses) or by other departments. 1 or more classes should be taken during a master's degree program and 2 or more classes should be taken during a doctoral degree program.
But, major courses below can be accepted as Research Methodology Courses:
- All major courses from Educational Measurement and Statistics
- EDU 513 Research methods in the History and Philosophy of Education
- EDU 628 Methodology for Curriculum Studies
- EDU 583 Research Methods in Educational Administration
5. Qualification criteria for Thesis and Dissertation submission:
1) The proposal meeting should be held in a public forum at least one semester before the submission of the master’s thesis or the doctoral dissertation. The proposal presentation should be reviewed by two or more professors in the candidate's major field of study. After the presentation, the quality of the proposal should be evaluated by the candidate’s thesis/dissertation advisor. The candidate’s thesis/dissertation advisor needs to submit the evaluation form to the graduate coordinator by April 30th for spring semester or October 31th for fall semester.
2) To submit a doctoral dissertation, students should abide by the article 54 (Requirements for Submitting a Master's Degree Dissertation) No. 6 and article 101 (Requirements for Submitting a Dissertation) No. 6 from the bylaws of the Graduate School. Different rules will be applied for the comprehensive exam for graduation.
3) Candidates for a Ph.D. degree must submit several required documents to the graduate coordinator (department office). The forms are the following: a transcript (proving the completion of major foundation and research methodology courses), a list of journal articles, an official transcript of English test score, a proposal evaluation form, and the results of the graduation examination. Prior to submitting the forms, a dissertation application form should be submitted to the administrative office of the College of Education.
4) Candidates for a master’s degree must submit several required documents to the graduate coordinator (department office). The forms are the following: a transcript (proving the completion of major foundation and research methodology courses), an official transcript of English test score, a proposal evaluation form, and the results of the graduation examination. Prior to submitting the forms, a dissertation application form should be submitted to the administrative office of the College of Education.
5)The graduate coordinator examines and confirms the supporting documents using a checklist and ultimately decides students' qualification for candidacy.
6. The rules and regulations of a Combined Master's & Doctoral Program are as follows:
1) Qualification criteria:
Those who completed their 2nd semester of a master’s program and whom the department committee admitted through the standard admission procedure. But, the number of admissions should be limited to the admission quota for the doctoral degree.
2) Curriculum:
A minimum of 54 credits are required for completion of a combined master's and doctoral program. Students in this program must complete 3 or more courses related to research methodology.
3) Dissertation Submission:
Students in a combined master's and doctoral program should only submit a dissertation for their doctoral degree without submitting a master's thesis. In cases where the student decides to give up a doctoral degree, the master's degree could be awarded through a thesis defense procedure if the student satisfies the terms and credits for a master’s program.
4) Other issues should be determined in accordance with the departmental policy for master's and doctoral degrees.
Comprehensive Examinations

1. Comprehensive examinations for a master's degree: Students will select 3 courses from their major or other majors (including core courses) under the approval of their academic advisor.
2. Comprehensive examinations for a doctoral degree and a combined master’s and doctoral degree: Students will select 4 courses from their major or other majors (including core courses) under the approval of their academic advisor.
3. An oral examination can be conducted if the following conditions are met:
1) Master’s Degree: Students’ research performance scores over 20 according to the faculty performance evaluation standard.
2) Doctoral Degree: Students’ research performance scores over 40 according to the faculty performance evaluation standard.
3) Students who are qualified for an exemption from the graduation exam should submit an "Oral Examination Form" to the department office with a list of journal articles. The graduate coordinator needs to review and submit the form and the list of journal articles to the graduate school office. The oral presentation should be evaluated by 2 or more people and the presentation is suggested to be performed in English or a foreign language.
Advisor's Designated Courses
1. Students in the M.A., Ph.D. and the combined M.A./Ph.D. program are to register to courses designated by the advisor. Their advisor will decide the number of designated courses, but it should not exceed 3 courses. The advisor can also decide to exempt students from taking the designated courses.
2. Other rules regarding the designated courses are specified in the bylaws of the Graduate School.
Addendum
This policy will be applied to and become effective for students entering the graduate school after March, 2012. The rules on Advisor's Designated Courses are applied to students admitted after March, 2010.
